Electrical Panels
We have replaced electrical panels in Houston homes since 2007. Our electricians handle 200 amp upgrades and overhead to underground conversions.
House rewiring in Houston replaces a home's old wiring with new copper circuits. In the oldest houses, that can mean knob and tube or cloth-insulated wire. In others, it can mean ungrounded two-prong circuits, or aluminum branch wiring from the mid-1960s and early 1970s. Each new circuit is grounded, with GFCI protection where the current code calls for it. We handle whole house rewiring and partial rewires; outlets, switches and fixtures on their own fall under our electrical services.
VCS Construction and Remodeling has worked on Houston homes since 2007. Master electricians on our team plan and run each rewire, and our own crew handles the wall repair. One company covers the wire and the walls. We rewire homes across Harris County, in places like Houston Heights, Montrose, River Oaks and Bellaire. Estimates are free, and we set a date after the estimate.

Old wiring usually shows itself in small ways: lights flicker, or a switch plate feels warm to the touch. A breaker keeps tripping, or a room has only two-prong outlets. HomeGuide says many older homes also have a fuse box or a 60-amp breaker panel, too small for today's appliances. Sometimes the first sign is an insurer asking what kind of wiring the house has. Any of these is a reason to have our master electricians look behind the walls.
Knob and tube is the oldest wiring we replace. Angi says it was commonly used from 1880 to the 1970s, and it has no ground wire. Angi ranks knob and tube surrounded by insulation among the biggest fire hazards in a home, since insulation overheats it. Aluminum branch wiring has a different weak spot: Angi says it expands and contracts more than copper as temperatures change. Over time, that loosens connections and adds fire risk.
The Census Bureau's 2020 to 2024 American Community Survey puts the median build year of Houston's housing at 1982. Nearly half of the city's homes and apartments were built in 1979 or earlier. More than a quarter were built before 1970, and about one in six before 1960. Angi says homes built from the mid-1960s to the early 1970s probably have aluminum wiring. Many Houston homes went up while knob and tube or aluminum wiring was in use.
Our master electricians start by going through the house and planning the new circuits room by room. Then they fish new copper wire through small openings in the walls and ceilings. In a postwar ranch house on a slab, the wire comes down from the attic. A City historic district report calls raised pier-and-beam foundations characteristic of the historic Heights, with its early 20th century bungalows. In those houses, and in the Montrose bungalows on pier-and-beam, new wire can also come up from the crawl space.
In the City of Houston, only registered master electricians can get an electrical permit, so ours pull it. The Houston Permitting Center lists wall cover and ceiling cover inspections among its electrical inspections. We meet the City inspector, who sees the new wiring before the walls and ceilings are closed. The City says all work under an electrical permit must be inspected and approved before the project is finalized. The City's residential guide lists the 2023 National Electrical Code, in effect since September 1, 2023.
After the cover inspections, our own crew patches the openings in the drywall or plaster. We match the texture around each patch, then repaint the wall. Electrical-only companies often stop once the wire is in, so the patching falls to another trade. If a remodel is coming, plan the rewire into the same project. With walls already open for kitchen remodeling, new wire goes in first and each wall gets finished once.
Angi's Houston guide prices rewiring at about $2 to $4 per square foot, and calls size the biggest factor. By its table, a 1,500 square foot house runs about $3,000 to $6,000. A 2,500 square foot house runs about $5,000 to $10,000. Angi's national guide lists opening and repairing walls at about $4 to $8 per square foot more. It adds that contractors will likely charge up to $500 for cleanup.
HomeGuide's numbers run higher: $10,000 to $30,000 on average, or $5 to $17 per square foot. It puts fishing wire through the attic or floor joists at $10,000 to $20,000 on average. Opening walls, rewiring and replacing drywall averages $20,000 to $30,000 or more. HomeGuide says opening walls completely adds 25% to 30% to the total. It also says plaster walls often cost more to rewire than drywall, because plaster repair costs more.
The guides disagree, and your own house sets the real number. Size, access and plaster or drywall all move it, and so does the panel. Angi's Houston guide says jobs on decades-old wiring usually include upgrades to the whole electrical system, panel included. When the panel is too small for the new circuits, the rewire pairs with electrical panel replacement. Call (713) 828-3097, and we will price your own house at a free estimate.

VCS did an outstanding job on our kitchen and master bed/bath remodel. What made them different was their attention to detail from start to finish. Trey would meet with us on a weekly basis to review completed work as well as scheduling and work for the following week. His team was extremely professional, knowledgable, and courteous. They went above and beyond for us and the quality of work was fantastic. They focused and kept to the scheduled timeline. I would highly recommend VCS Construction and Remodeling.

We hired VCS for a custom garage buildout and they delivered to the highest degree. Trey went over countless ideas for what I wanted and I could not be happier with the outcome. He is a well respected car guy in the community so he does know his stuff when it comes to custom Garages. Well Done!
