Sewer Camera Inspection in Houston, TX

Sewer Camera Inspection · Houston, TX

We run a camera through your sewer line before anyone digs

A sewer camera inspection in Houston shows what is inside the pipe that carries waste away from your house. Our master plumbers feed a camera into the line and watch the live picture as it moves. Roots, grease, cracks and sagging pipe can all show up in that picture. What the camera shows tells us what the line needs. Sometimes that is nothing at all.

VCS Construction and Remodeling has worked on Houston homes since 2007. Every sewer job we take on starts with a camera run through the line. When the camera shows a problem, we handle the plumbing, the dig, the concrete and the floors as one contractor. We set a date after the estimate. Based near downtown Houston, we work in places like the Heights, Montrose, Bellaire and Pasadena, all in Harris County.

What We Handle

  • Sewer camera runs through the main line
  • Cleanout access, or a toilet pulled to get in
  • Roots, grease, rust and cracks seen on camera
  • Sags, offsets and breaks spotted before digging
  • Camera checks before a remodel moves a drain
  • Sewer line repairs and full replacements
  • City of Houston plumbing permits by master plumbers
  • Concrete poured back and floors repaired after a dig

What are the signs your Houston sewer line needs a camera inspection?

Watch for slow drains in more than one fixture at the same time. Toilets gurgle when the washer empties, or the tub backs up when someone flushes. A sewer smell in the house or yard points the same way. So do clogs that keep coming back, and grease is a common cause. Houston Public Works says 70% of the city's sewer overflows start as clogs of grease and flushed wipes. When temperatures drop, the department answers twice as many overflows caused by grease.

A backup is the loudest sign. Houston Public Works says cleanouts mark the limits of the city's public sewer system. Problems with private wastewater pipes, which are typically closer to the home, are the homeowner's responsibility. For a backed-up toilet, the city says to check your cleanout at the street. It is typically white plastic pipe with a threaded or pull-off cap. If sewer water is standing there, call 311. If none is, the blockage is on your private line, and the city says to call a plumber.

House age and trees raise the odds of trouble. An older house may still drain through cast iron, clay or Orangeburg, a fiber pipe. Big trees send roots toward any joint that leaks. Angi says regular inspections are especially valuable for older homes or properties with large trees nearby. When buyers order a home inspection, HomeGuide recommends adding a sewer scope if the house is older than 20 years. If your remodel will move a drain, we run the camera through the line first.

What does a sewer camera inspection show, and what does it cost in Houston?

Our master plumbers start at the cleanout, the capped pipe where the camera goes in. When a house has no cleanout, they pull a toilet to get into the line. HomeAdvisor says costs drop when the camera goes in through a cleanout instead of a toilet or vent stack. The camera travels down the pipe while they watch the live picture. Angi says most homes have sewer lines between 50 and 100 feet. Angi also says most inspections are priced per visit, not per foot.

The live picture shows what sits inside the pipe. Roots push into the joints and grow into a mat. Grease coats the walls and narrows the opening. Old cast iron rusts and builds up scale, and older pipe cracks or breaks. A sag holds standing water, and an offset joint leaves a lip where waste catches. HomeGuide says the plumber watches the live picture from the drain camera to find clogs, damaged pipe or tree roots.

Published cost guides land far apart on this one. HomeAdvisor lists Houston's average sewer line camera inspection at $420. Angi's 2026 cost guide puts the average at $995, and most homeowners spend $271 to $1,725. HomeGuide's 2026 guide puts it at $125 to $500, or $175 to $750 when the house has no cleanout. HomeAdvisor notes its price covers the inspection only, and repairs are extra. If the camera shows a failed line, read the cost of replacing a sewer line in Houston.

What happens after a sewer camera inspection in Houston?

The next step follows from the picture. A sound line needs no dig at all. One failed joint in an otherwise good pipe points to a sewer line repair. We cut out that section and set new pipe in its place. Damage along the whole run points to replacing the main sewer line. Old cast iron often fails along its whole length. Patch one break, and you can end up paying for the same dig twice.

Some drain lines run under the slab. When one of them leaks, the job becomes fixing a leak under the slab. Our master plumbers run that work. A tunnel dug from outside reaches the pipe from below, so the floors above stay in place. We backfill and pack the tunnel afterward so the ground under the house stays supported. When a dig does cut concrete, we pour it back. Our own crew repairs the floors a dig touches.

The camera runs through drain lines, not the water supply. On the supply side, our master plumbers isolate the lines and pressure test them. Low pressure and rusty or brown water point to old supply pipe. Old galvanized pipe rusts shut from the inside, and old copper can spring pinhole leaks. When all the supply pipe is old, the fix is repiping the water supply lines with PEX. The new lines run overhead through the attic, and our own crew patches and paints the walls we open.

At one Houston home, our crew ran the camera through the old sewer line before the new pipe went in. The new white PVC line went into a trench along the side of the house, with a cleanout riser. It tied in under the edge of the slab from outside. The Houston Permitting Center says the master plumber who buys a plumbing permit must be registered with the city. Master plumbers on our team pull ours, and we meet the inspector. Call (713) 828-3097 for a free estimate.

How much does a sewer camera inspection cost in Houston?
HomeAdvisor lists Houston's average at $420. Angi's 2026 cost guide puts the average at $995, and most homeowners spend $271 to $1,725. HomeGuide puts it at $125 to $500, or $175 to $750 without a cleanout. HomeAdvisor notes its price covers the inspection only, so repairs are extra.
Who is responsible for the sewer line, me or the City of Houston?
Houston Public Works says problems with private wastewater pipes, which are typically closer to the home, are the homeowner's responsibility. The department is responsible for public pipes and pipes in the public right-of-way. It says cleanouts mark the limits of the city's public sewer system. If sewer water is standing at your street cleanout, it says to call 311.
How long does a sewer line inspection take?
Most take roughly an hour, according to HomeAdvisor. Angi says most homes have sewer lines between 50 and 100 feet. HomeAdvisor says standard inspection cameras reach roughly 330 to 350 feet, well past that. A house with no cleanout adds a step, since a toilet has to come up first.
Can a sewer camera inspection find tree roots?
Yes, roots that grow into the pipe show up in the live picture. They push in at the joints, where pipe sections meet, and spread until they catch paper and waste. Big trees near the line raise the odds. If roots have cracked or broken the pipe, that shows too, and it points to a repair or replacement.
Should I get a camera inspection before a kitchen or bath remodel?
Yes, if the remodel moves a drain, because the new pipe ties into the old line. We run the camera through that line first. The live picture shows whether it is sound before new tile and cabinets go in. In an older house with cast iron or clay drains, that check can change the plan and the budget.
